In this webinar, Claudia Pinheiro, assistant professor at the University of Maia, PhD in Social Sciences with a specialisation in Sociology of Sports from the University of Leicester in England and member of the coordinating team of the National Observatory on Violence against Athletes (ObNVA), introduced the ObNVA, an online platform created to collect and analyse, anonymously and confidentially, experiences or witnessed incidents of violence against athletes. The Observatory aims to give a voice to victims, former victims, and anyone who has witnessed situations perceived as violent; refer cases to the competent authorities; produce scientific knowledge; and contribute to effective policies for preventing and combating violence in sport. She addressed the types and impacts of violence (physical, psychological, sexual, and social) in sports environments, as well the profile of (former) victims and perpetrators. She also analysed the power relations between athletes, coaches and parents, the cultural normalisation of abusive behaviour and gender differences in experiences of victimisation.
In the second part, Lara Ximenes, a junior researcher of the project UnCoveR: Sexual Violence in Portuguese Mediascape , currently ongoing at CES-UC and a MA in Journalism and Communication at FLUC, discussed the media representations of sexual violence in youth and high-performance sport.
